Kinship Poems

10 comments:

  1. Transitions
    Hallways like a crowded sea
student swimming from class to class-
full of energy like the waving seaweed
    Watch out!
    Here comes the sharks-
    back stroke to your class

    Puberty
    Because the dark corners
    are teeming
    streaming
    with them.
And no matter where you turn
    how much light you shine
    how much air you pour
    on them.
    There are there.
    Teenagers engrossed in PDA.

  2. Change
    By: Ellen Therens

Change is what I've been waiting for
Without thinking what my change will be
Change for me means a completed degree
But I'll also become the mother of two.
My baby won't be my only baby,
What will my change mean for her?
There are always changes to look forward to,
But I have to remember what change means.

    Degree

Degree is what I hope for
    Reading Specialist it is
    Where I go from here
    Is still undetermined

  3. Caterpillar

    fuzzy, creepy
    crawling, growing, expanding
    slowly transitioning into an adult
    flying, flapping, exploring...
    quiet, still
    Butterfly

    Transition Haiku

    caterpillar crawls
    dreaming of a bright future
    wings wide in the wind

    Thank you.
    One door closed
    and another opened.
An opportunity I will never forget.
    Goodbye.

  6. Transition
    By: Melissa Potts

Transitions appear often in my life
    From homes
    To schools
    To grade levels
    To classrooms

My hopes are that one day,
    Transitions stop,
    And everything falls into place

    Hopes
    By: By: Ellen Therens

My hopes became dreams that became reality
My hopes have changed and no longer focus on me
My hopes are for others, that their hopes become their reality

  8. Heater
    By: Kendall Huff

    Oh heat oh heater
You make that house so hot that you make me feel like I want to go to antarctica.
Oh heater oh heater u are trouble when I get hot and have to turn you up
You make me get in trouble.

    Antarctica
    By: Anali Guzman

I often wonder I would survive in Antarctica.
    Will an animal eat me?
Will I freeze from the cold?
Will the ice break off and make me disappear?

These thoughts only come on hot hot days
    On summer afternoons
or after the children are taken out to play.

    Well
    I lie....
They also happen on hot winter nights when the heater is much too high.

Perhaps I am in denial and just want to go away.
Antarctica sounds nice and far away....

  9. Hot
    By: Anali Guzman

    You see,
The word hot can mean many things.
    Which hot do you mean?

Hot like the beaming sun on summer days?
Hot like a tortilla fresh off the stove?
Hot like the cookies that were just baked in the oven?

    OR

Hot like the violence in the streets?
Hot like the new Kanye song on the radio?
Hot like the new gumshoes that I saw at the Nike store?

    OR

Hot like the warm feeling after the kisses from my niece/nephew gives me?
Hot like the abuelita hot chocolate my mom makes me?
Hot like the body heat from a big family or fiends hug?

You see, a lot of things can be hot.
What kind of hot did you mean?

  10. Lately I've had a rough time transitioning
Longing for the simpler days of youth
No mortgages, no credit card bills
    Long summers were our truth

    Now life's not so simple,
Now late nights aren't a thing,
No cutting class, no joy rides,
No Backstreet for me to sing

Although I struggle now with this life I lead
    Adulting sure is rough
It's nice to know this money's mine,
and my stuff is my stuff

    Backstreet Boys, NSynce, 98 Degrees
The music and songs from my youth
    when life was a breeze
I wonder whatever happen to those guys?

    Maybe they realized the reality.
    We can't all be superstars;
    we can't all be JT.
Some of us work for years and never feel the spotlight.

But just because no one's giving you applause
Doesn't mean you shouldn't keep working
    To further your intended cause
After all, there's no harmony without back up
